Pep Talk: Hope and Healing in the Home

Posted by Peppy DuTart on

You hear the term “dysfunctional” in regard to families a lot these days.  The word dysfunctional refers to the sense of disintegration produced in a family where there is a lot of hurt.  From a Christian perspective, it’s a home that is not functioning the way God intended.  A dysfunctional family could be the result of divorce, lack of communication, rivalry among the children, self-consumed parents, addictions, child abuse, sexual abuse, extra-marital affairs, pornography, and the list just goes on and on and on and on!  And it’s pretty disturbing.  But here’s what is even more disturbing –

One of the striking dynamics in a dysfunctional family is that when their children grow up, they often repeat the same mistakes their parents made and the end result is that dysfunctional families create dysfunctional families who create dysfunctional families for generations.  In fact, Numbers 14:18 says “that God visits the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation”, which is the horrible consequence of doing this whole family thing wrong.

We talk a lot today about the White House but maybe it’s time to take a good hard look at what’s going on in your house.  I submit to you that dysfunctional can miraculously become functional if you will agree to do family God’s way with God’s power.  Remember the words of King Jesus – “the wise man builds his house upon the rock.”
